UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay Groundbreaking on October 27th

On October 27th, between 1pm – 5pm, the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay will be celebrating its ground breaking with a family-oriented community festival for neighbors, employees, and students.

The event will be held on 16th Street and 3rd Street, across from the new home of the Mission Bay UCSF Medical Center.  Highlights of the event will include:

  • UCSF’s community care along with innovative medicine, and advanced technology, share UCSF history, tradition and future
  • Information about UCSF’s commitment to green design through environmental educational activities
  • Information about local community organizations
  • Community art and performance partnerships
  • Tours of the new hospital mock-up rooms
  • Walking tours of the Mission Bay campus and art installations
  • A family-friendly farmers market with cooking demos

BMAGIC Backpack Giveaway Coming Up On August 14th @ Bayview Opera House

The annual BMAGIC Backpack Giveaway is coming up this August 14th, from 11:00am – 3:00pm at the Bayview Opera House (4705 Third Street at Newcomb Avenue).  In addition to a variety of fun activities for event attendees to enjoy, the Backpack Giveaway offers free backpacks and school supplies to neighborhood students heading into any grade between Kindergarten – 12th.   If you are a student or the parent of a student, don’t miss this opportunity! July 27th BMA Meeting Agenda Now Available

This coming Tuesday, the BMA’s July meeting will be held at Auntie April’s on Third and McKinnon. We will be talking about a whole bunch of issues including contracting opportunities for local contractors, affordable housing on Third Street, a Third Street beautification project, and a local merchant-run energy savings program, among others.  Please see the below flier for further details.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

Third Street Stakeholder’s Meeting THIS THURSDAY @ Southeast Community Center

This Thursday, July 22nd, at 10:00am in the Alex Pitcher Community Room at the Southeast Community Center (1800 Oakdale Avenue), the Third Street Stakeholder’s Committee will be convening for the first time under the new leadership of Third Street Corridor Manager James Moore to discuss all things Third Street.

The upcoming meeting will specifically address upcoming events including National Night Out Against Crime (on August 3rd) and next year’s Bayview Music Festival (sometime in May), as well as a Third Street marketing campaign that will include T-shirts and banners that will be installed along the corridor.

If you are interested in the vitality of the Bayview’s main commercial street, please join the Committee by showing up on Thursday morning!  It is a great opportunity to be involved in your community and to get your voice heard on issues affecting the neighborhood.

Bayview-Hunters Point’s 2010 National Night Out Against Crime Coming in August!

The 2010 National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime celebration is coming to the Bayview on August 3rd, 2010, from 4pm – 8pm at the Mendell Plaza (Third Street and Oakdale Avenue).

NNO event coordinators are expecting between 500 – 1000 event attendees this year, who will enjoy live music from Mazacote and the Reed Fromer Band (among others), family-oriented games and activities, and the comedic stylings of Donald Lacy, all while celebrating safety and diversity in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood.

For those unfamiliar, National Night Out is a community-driven, nationwide effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Project Homeless Connect in the Bayview this Friday

Once a year, Project Homeless Connect comes to the Bayview to provide a multitude of services to homeless members of the community.  This Friday at the Bayview Playground (next to the MLK pool at Third and Armstrong) between 10:00am – 3:00pm will be this year’s event, called “Bayview Connect.”

Services provided include dental care, food stamps, legal assistance, medical aid, shelter, housing information veterans services, vision care, and more.  Please see the below flier and Project Homeless Connect’s website for details.

Artsfest 3 THIS SATURDAY @ 3rd & Fairfax

This Saturday, June 5th, from 12pm – 6pm on Fairfax Ave and Third Street in the Bayview, the Art 94124 Gallery is hosting its 3rd Annual “Artsfest,” a community-wide celebration of all things art, and open to the general public.  Please read below for further details and check out their website HERE for even more details on the event including additional event highlights, a schedule of activities, musician line-up, and event sponsors:

The theme of this year’s ARTSFEST is 3! For the 3RD year in a row, 3RD & Fairfax in Bayview-Hunters Point will come alive with MUSIC, ART, and FUN at the 3RD-annual ARTSFEST hosted by ART 94124 on Saturday June 5 from 12pm–5pm.
The goal of the event is 3-fold:

1 | To bring the growing circle of ART 94124 artists, supporters, and Bayview-Hunters Point community residents together to celebrate art.

2 |  To continue to promote ART 94124 as a catalyst for future art exhibits, community projects, and art-related events.

3 | To formally embark on the 3rd year of building the community through art at ART 94124 and the ART 94124 GALLERY.

The fun-filled street fair will feature a great line-up of diverse music, performances, artist booths, art-related vendors and other retailers, info tables from various community groups, art activities for children, a silkscreen demonstration, and chalk drawing, and tasty eats. In the ART 94124 GALLERY will be 3: ART 94124’s Anniversary Benefit Group Exhibit, a benefit exhibit that supports future exhibits and events at ART 94124.

Bayview-based Cyclecide will be joining us again this year—with more rides and wacky bike-inspired merriment!

Third Street Corridor Project: Slogans Needed!

Call for Submissions: 3rd Street Slogan Contest

The Third Street Corridor Project is searching for a Bayview-Hunters Point community stakeholder to create a slogan for our Third Street commercial corridor. The slogan should have the effect of shining a positive light on our unique and thriving community and its main business district, as part of the ongoing Third Street corridor campaign. (A sample of how the art and slogan might be used together is shown here.) Current slogans under consideration include:

  • EAT, SHOP, WALK, LIVE
  • The Sunny Side of San Francisco
  • It’s All Happening Here
  • The Hidden Treasure of San Francisco
  • Takin’ It Back
  • Keep it Third
  • Soul of the City
  • Downtown’s Uptown
  • Experience our Flavor

The selected slogan’s creator will receive a $500 stipend for his/her submission. Rights surrounding use of the slogan will become property of the Third Street Corridor Project.

Slogan submissions should not exceed 15 words in length and should be emailed to bayviewmerchantsassociation@gmail.com by June 11th at 12:00pm. Please include your name and contact information together with the slogan.

Finalists Selected for 3rd Street Corridor Branding Campaign

The Third Street Corridor Project and Bayview Merchants’ Association are happy to announce that three artists have been selected as finalists for the 2010 3rd Street Corridor Project. One of these artists will go on to produce the full series of iconic artwork of Bayview Hunters Point that will be printed on street banners and other materials. The three local artists are Malik Seneferu, Juan Fuentes, and Sarah Stangle. (Samples of their previous work pictured here.)

During this next month these three artists will submit artwork that demonstrates their vision for the campaign, culminating in a summertime exhibition showcased somewhere in the community (location yet to be determined).

Project Schedule

May 21: Final selection of artist. Work on final illustrations begins.

Late June: Final Slogan chosen. Final illustrations complete.

Late July: Public unveiling of art on 3rd street.
