Bayview-Hunters Point’s 2010 National Night Out Against Crime Coming in August!

The 2010 National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime celebration is coming to the Bayview on August 3rd, 2010, from 4pm – 8pm at the Mendell Plaza (Third Street and Oakdale Avenue).

NNO event coordinators are expecting between 500 – 1000 event attendees this year, who will enjoy live music from Mazacote and the Reed Fromer Band (among others), family-oriented games and activities, and the comedic stylings of Donald Lacy, all while celebrating safety and diversity in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood.

For those unfamiliar, National Night Out is a community-driven, nationwide effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

For more information on the event, please contact James Moore, the new Third Street Corridor Manager and National Night Out event coordinator at (415) 647-3728 x411 or at

Keep checking the blog for updates on additional entertainment and activities coming to this year’s event!  And, if you haven’t done so already, confirm that you are attending on the event’s Facebook page.

Bayshore Blvd Economic Action Plan Meeting NEXT TUESDAY

Next Tuesday, June 22nd, the Bayview and Bernal Heights communities will convene at 6pm at the Iron Workers Local 377 building on 570 Barnevald Ave (@ Industrial off of Bayshore) to discuss future plans for Bayshore Boulevard. This is the second in a series of three meetings on the issue of the redevelopment of Bayshore and, the city tells us, the most important of the three meetings.

As a result, the Bayview Merchants’ Association’s monthly meeting will not convene as usual and will instead will be replaced by this meeting, so as to have maximum representation from the Bayview community.  This is the BMA’s chance to have our voice heard as it pertains to the redevelopment of Bayshore Boulevard and the economic opportunities associated with this redevelopment project.

Please see the flier below for details and invite your family, friends and neighbors.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Sunday Streets in the Bayview this Sunday! Co-Hosted by the BMA!

For folks looking for something to do this Sunday, May 23rd, look no further!  This weekend marks the 2nd Sunday Streets in the Bayview this year and the 5th overall Bayview Sunday Streets.  Each year, increasingly more community-based organizations have gotten involved in Sunday Streets programming to take advantage of the streets being closed off for the day.

This year marks the most extensive programming seen yet during a Bayview Sunday Streets, with three major hubs of activities along Third Street in the Bayview.   Most notably is the Bayview Music Festival on Third and Galvez by the Bayview Plaza.   Also, there is a Health & Wellness Fair at the Bayview Opera House at Third and Oakdale and a slew of other activities by the MLK pool at Third and Armstrong.

Come on down with your bicycle, skateboard, rollerskates, feet, or any other non-motorized contraption this Sunday and join in the festivities!  There will be food, games, entertainment, and best of all, all your friends and neighbors will be there partying in the street!

People’s Earth Day in the Bayview on Sunday, April 18th

The first of two Bayview Sunday Streets is coming up next Sunday, April 18th from 10am – 3pm.  The route for the event will start at AT&T Park and go down Terry Francois Blvd until Mariposa Street and then follow Third Street (northbound lane only) all the way down to MLK Park (3rd and Armstrong). Please see the map to the left for details.

Although this is the official route of the event, there will be an offshoot to the event well worth checking out sponsored by the Bayview’s own environmental advocacy organization, Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ).  The event will be held at the end of Cargo Way at Heron’s Head Park and will be a celebration of the brand new, 100% off-the-grid eco-center located at the entrance of the park.  Activities at the LEJ-sponsored “People’s Earth Day” event include music, entertainment, food, bird-watching tours, and much more.  See the poster below for more details.
