BMA August Meeting Recap

Thanks to all that came out to last night’s BMA meeting at Taqueria La Laguna on Third and Fairfax.  Despite the extreme heat (yesterday’s high was a whopping 99 degrees!) and the low  attendance (low being a relative term, as we usually have  upwards of 30 attendees) due to summer vacation and a District 10 Supervisor candidates’ “Meet & Greet” a few blocks away, there was a wealth of information at the meeting of concern to Bayview merchants and residents alike. And thanks to BMA Secretary ShaMauda Bishop’s videotaping of the meeting, the BMA is able to share this information with everyone who wasn’t able to make it.

The meeting began with a brief report from the SFPD Bayview Station, followed by an introduction and subsequent debate on Proposition G, a Proposition on the November ballot that would change the work rules and pay structure of MUNI drivers and operators. District 7 Supervisor Sean Elsbernd, author and sponsor of the proposition, and Rafael Cabrera, interim President of the San Francisco Transit Workers’ Union, discussed the merits of the Proposition:

This conversation was followed by another MUNI-related issue: fare evasion “stings” conducted by the SFPD and SFMTA to set an example for folks who do not pay their MUNI fares and to help generate revenue for the cash-strapped agency.  Critics attest that these “stings” are being disproportionately targeted at low-income communities of color.  Here is the second half of the Proposition G debate followed by SFPD Deputy Chief of the MUNI Response Team speaking to the Bayview merchants about the recent uptick in these “stings” that have resulted in several fines and even some arrests:

The remainder of the meeting was dedicated to a couple of presentations and announcements, including a presentation on the Southeast Food Access (SEFA) Working Group’s efforts to improve safe & healthy food access in the Bayview and a presentation on the available affordable apartments for sale at 4800 Third Street at Oakdale in the heart of the Bayview.  For more information on this meeting, please see the meeting’s minutes or the Bayview Merchants’ Association’s Youtube channel, where the rest of the meeting’s footage is posted.
